Leghold traps

Two problems with the traps

ALIVE News 2004

The Law Concerning Wildlife Protection and Hunting allows people holding a hunting license to use leghold traps. We think that this kind of trap should be banned completely (including production, sale, and possession).

There are two problems with these traps at present:

  1. Currently hunters must display an identification sign on each trap.

However, because those who intend to use them illegally can easily bypass this regulation it is very difficult to catch violators. (Regulations for the use of traps do exist and when a person violates these regulations they will be punished.)

  2. Because there are no controls regarding the sale of traps, there is effectively no restriction on their illegal use. Leghold traps are sold in hardware stores enabling even people who do not have a hunting license to purchase them.
