Supply of Dogs and Cats from Pounds and Seizures to Animal
Experimentation Facilities Falls to Zero
ALIVE News Dec.
2005x
In Japan, for many years
it was common practice
for abandoned pet dogs
and cats to be collected
by local authorities
and disposed of by being
supplied to animal experimentation
facilities. In 1986,
more than 100,000 former
pets were used in experiments
ALIVE and its sister
organization AVA-net
have been at the vanguard
of a continuing campaign
to an end to this practice.
As a result of public
pressure, the numbers
of local authorities
engaged in supplying
dogs an cats from pounds
and seizures has fallen
year by year, and in
2005 the total number
of such a pets supplied
is expected to finally
fall to virtually zero.
