Supply of Dogs and Cats from Pounds and Seizures to Animal Experimentation Facilities Falls to Zero

In Japan, for many years it was common practice for abandoned pet dogs and cats to be collected by local authorities and disposed of by being supplied to animal experimentation facilities. In 1986, more than 100,000 former pets were used in experiments ALIVE and its sister organization AVA-net have been at the vanguard of a continuing campaign to an end to this practice. As a result of public pressure, the numbers of local authorities engaged in supplying dogs an cats from pounds and seizures has fallen year by year, and in 2005 the total number of such a pets supplied is expected to finally fall to virtually zero.
